    First of all let us understand what is Expansion Ratio. Expansion Ratio is the ratio of quantity of foam generated to the quantity of foam used. Simply speaking it gives an idea of the amount of foam that can be generated by using unit quantity of foam. Therefore, Expansion Ratio = (Quantity of foam generated) / (Quantity of foam solution used) Low expansion foams are those solution which expands less to generate foam and therefore they have lesser expansion ratio of about 12:1. Low expansion foams are heavier and therefore used on open deck fires as it is not carried away by the wind easily. High expansion foams on the other hand, is lighter compared to low expansion foam and has a expansion ratio of above 100:1 and therefore expands more. This foam is mainly used in fighting fire in confined spaces such as Engine Room. It is not used in outdoor fires as it is easily carried away by the wind.

    Sand box is required in the Boiler firing area. Sand box should consists of at least 0.1 m3 of sand, saw dust impregnated with soda or similar arrangement provided with a suitable shovel. This can be replaced by a suitable fire extinguisher.

    1. All means of access such as ladders, stairs are safe, well lit and unobstructed. 2. Warning notices put in case access is in dangerous condition. 3. Guard rails in proper condition 4. Portable ladder properly secured 5. Opening fenced suitably 6. Ship’s working area is safe to enter. 7. All levels to be adequately lit 8. Area to be ventilated 9. Loose tools, stores kept in dedicated places and secured. 10. Machinery systems properly guarded. 11. Operating instructions properly displayed. 12. Safety signs displayed. 13. PPE’s for crew available and in good condition 14. Work permit system is being followed. 15. Proper tools being used. 16. Paint drums, chemicals, tools etc to be secured and locked

    Prior carrying out work aloft - 1. Detailed Risk Assessment shall be carried out 2. Tool Box talk shall be done and equipments shall be inspected and work plan discussed 3. Proper guard against falling – a stage or ladder shall always be used 4. Personnel under 18 years of age and less than 12 months of experience shall not work aloft 5. Persons working aloft (above 2 meters) should wear a safety harness with lifeline 6. Rig a safety net where appropriate 7. Buoyancy garments (life vest) to be worn and lifebuoy to be kept ready 8. A person should always be observing him on the deck 9. If all above is OK, Work aloft permit shall be completed and signed by the responsible person 10. Other than a emergency situation, personnel should not work aloft when the ship is underway. 11. When work is near the whistle – ensure power is off and warning signs have been posted. 12. When working near the funnel – duty engineer to ensure reduction in steam, gases and fumes emission. 13. Similarly, when working near Radio aerials – no radio transmission to be carried out and when near radar mast no radar operation to be done. 14. Suitable warning signs and notices to be displayed 15. Tools shall be lowered and sent up by lines in suitable containers properly secured.

    The type certification of Immersion Suits (issued at the time of manufacturing) carry an expiration date for a simple reason because the suits are required to be re-inspected. Safety equipments (such as Immersion suits) requires Inspection by a competent person at periodic intervals. Expiry dates are mentioned on such certificates which requires regular inspection.

    Fire fighting suit’s depending upon the type, can be made from different materials. Earlier, asbestos was widely used. Currently owing to hazardous properties of Asbestos, its usage is discontinued. Modern suits can be made up of Materials such as Zetex or vermiculite.

    Usually the DCP powder is a mix of sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate. Sometimes mono ammonium phosphate together with ammonium sulphate is also used.

    Dipper is used to take out drinking water from the container.... it is graduated so that water quantity can be measured. It is provided with a lanyard so that the water can be taken out from the container without spilling over since once in distress situation you need to save every drop of water!

    The FPD or Fall preventer device has two ends usually fitted D-Shackle arrangement for fixing manually. One end is fixed to the Floating Block of the Lifeboat falls and the other end is fixed to the Eye on the Boat. The attached picture shows the arrangement.

    Following shall be carried out for the maintenance of SCBA: Visual Checks - 1. Check Face Mask for scratches 2. Check Rubber components (face seal and tubing) for cracks etc 3. Check straps for tightness and fraying 4. Check condition of cylinder 5. Check the condition of belts 6. Check condition of tubings and gauges Operational Checks - 1. Check bottle pressure by opening the valve and closing the demand valve 2. meanwhile, check for air seal in the face mask 3. Release the pressure and try operation of low level whistle/alarm 4. Turn off the bottle valve

    Following procedures for carrying out pressure testing of fire hoses - 1. Lay down all fire hoses 2. Connect one fire hose to fire hydrant 3. Connect other hoses end-to-end to this hose so as to form a single system 4. Connect a nozzle to the open end 5. Ensure connections are tight 6. Secure the hoses and ensure that they do not run when fire pump is operating 7. When all checks are done start the fire pump and increase discharge pressure up to designated value (usually 6 bar) 8. Start inspecting closely each fire hose for any leakage 9. Give special attention to coupling areas and seized areas

    When the Life Raft inflates the excess pressure is released from the Pressure Relief Valve. Also during the high ambient temperature the excess pressure is released from the Pressure Relief Valve. Stabilizing pockets are small pockets attached at the underside of the life raft. They fill with water and prevent the life raft from capsizing. They provide stabilization to the life raft. Pic attached below.

    I presume we are talking about wet chemical type extinguishers used in extinguishing deep fat fryer fires. Wet Chemical fire extinguishers contain a liquid extinguishing agent which is used to smother fires ignited from cooking oils and fats. Wet chemical fire extinguishers are filled with potassium, which cools and lowers the temperature of the fire, therefore stopping the fire from spreading.
